HURRICANES SPUR WINDOW IMPROVEMENTS

BY PETE BISHOP, DAILY NEWS CORRESPONDENT, NAPLES DAILY NEWS

The technician stood at the control board, next to a beeping mass of painted red metal, corrugated aluminum and long black turret.

“Fire in the hole!” he announced over the loud hum of an air compressor, seconds before a 10-foot piece of lumber shot from the cannon and crashed through a glass window about 20 feet away.

The procedure was repeated moments later, but this time the 2x4 bounced off the window and fell to the pavement with a dull thud.

The hurricane-resistant glass was broken in a spider-web pattern, but the window remained intact.

“When you lose a window during a hurricane, the hurricane comes inside the house,” said glass consultant Paul Beers after watching the demonstration. “That’s the difference between the older windows and the ones that meet the newer codes.”

The demonstration was part of a seminar on wind-resistant glass attended by about 100 builders, architects and engineers at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point in Estero on Friday morning.

It featured a window made by CGI Windows and Doors, the Miami firm that sponsored the seminar.
